Overview
As a resident of Santa Fe County,
I have been shocked by the devastation of our Piñon trees
by the Bark Beetle. Many of our friends who have beautiful homes
in the Piñon covered hills of Santa Fe County have lost
entire tree populations in just one year. Most were understandably
heart-broken and disheartened by what had happened to their beautiful
land and really had no idea of what to do next.
Having an extensive background
in Agriculture, Landscaping and Real Estate dating back to the
mid 60's and 70's, I immediately looked into what was being done
here locally and began to think about what else might be available
to mitigate the awful Piñon Bark Beetle damage.
I spoke with Southwest regional
experts in Arboriculture and studied all the available US Forestry
Department information on the subject. Everyone seemed to
agree that at this point in time there is very little that we
can actually do to stop the spread of the beetle in Santa Fe
County. The problem here is so wide-spread that the Piñon's
are expected to suffer a 90-95% loss over the next few years.
It's too late to try to stop
the beetle by cutting the trees down and covering the piles with
plastic. The Bark Beetle population is so large and spread over
such a wide range that this kind of containment really is no
longer a viable option.
If the Piñon trees are
dead they should be cut down. Unfortunately, hauling the brush
or chips to the Municipal Landfill only creates a new and more
monstrous problem for the county and certainly doesn't curtail
the spread of the blight.
The problems that
face us now are: dead trees, fire hazard, soil erosion,
real estate property values, and aesthetics.
To resolve these problems, I
met with several major Forestry equipment manufactures in Florida,
Texas, Minnesota, Ohio, and reviewed their tree removal methods.
After looking at all the options, I purchased a specially
designed machine that can address our needs here in the Southwest
and do it in the most environmentally sound and cost-effective
method possible.
We no longer have to cut the
trees down with a chain-saw. Our all-wheel drive machine travels
over rough terrain directly to the dead Piñon tree and
literally mulches and shreds them where they stand in a matter
of minutes.
Our equipment reduces
Nature's own 15-year
bio-mass reduction cycle down to less than 15 minutes.
The rotor-tiller effect of the mulching
machine incorporates 100% of the organic matter directly back
into the soil. This
allows the surrounding Junipers, Chamisa, native grasses and
wild flowers to benefit from the nutrients of the mulched dead
Piñon tree and the greatly improved water holding capabilities
of the soil.
A local Arboriculturists recently
stated that over the past century the Piñon tree has given
us many, many precious gifts to enjoy and even though the tree
is presently sick and dying, it still has one more gift to give
us...its' mulch.
Our mechanical mulching method
quickly eliminates the eyesore and fire hazard of dead Piñons
in an environmentally sound and cost-effective manner.
We can lower
the cost of tree removal from the standard $17-$35
down to $8-$12 per tree, depending on tree size and terrain.
If you only have a few Piñon
trees to remove, you probably should call one of the reputable
Piñon tree cutting services. They will do a fine job cutting
down trees around houses and driveways.
But if you have a 100 trees
or more to remove, let us evaluate your situation and recommend
a course of action. We can work with properties ranging from
a few acres up to hundreds of acres of development land.
If we feel that our service is
the most appropriate and cost effective method to solve your
problem, we will quote you a fair price in writing.
